Description:

Never written a line of code before? This is exactly where to start.

Python Launchpad takes students from absolute zero to writing real, working programmes in just five days. No boring theory, no passive listening, students are coding from the moment they sit down.

Every day produces something finished. Monday a quiz, Tuesday Rock Paper Scissors, Wednesday a higher or lower guessing game, Thursday Hangman, and on Friday a project of their own. Along the way students pick up variables, decisions, loops, lists and functions, all taught through building rather than worksheets.

It’s the perfect way to see that code isn’t abstract – it’s something you build, control, and create with. From there, students move into core programming skills: variables, decision-making, loops, and problem-solving, all taught through hands-on projects rather than worksheets.

By the end of the week, students will have a real understanding of how code works, not just how to copy it. The camp is led by an experienced Head of Computing and supported by Computer Science undergraduates, former students who know exactly what it takes to make programming click for a beginner.

What students will be able to do by the end of the week:

Write and run their own Python programs from a blank file

Use variables, input and output to make programs that respond to the user

Work with different data types and convert between them

Use if, elif and else to make programs make decisions

Use while loops to repeat until something changes, and for loops to repeat a set number of times

Check and validate what a user types so a program does not crash

Store and work with collections of information using lists

Manipulate text: searching, slicing and comparing strings

Define and use their own functions to keep code organised and reusable

Read an error message, find the cause, and fix it independently

Break a problem down into steps before writing any code

Recognise when code produced by an AI tool is wrong, and explain why

Build and present a complete project of their own to an audience
